TIFF — Toronto International Film Festival — premieres roughly half the films that go on to win Oscars. It's 50 years old this year. Unlike Cannes (industry-only) or Venice (jury-only), TIFF is a public festival: regular humans can buy tickets to almost every screening.
King Street West shuts down for ten days. The TIFF Lightbox is HQ. Yorkville turns into a celebrity zoo. Premieres start at 6pm, after-parties run until 4am, and the People's Choice Award announced on closing day reliably tells you which film will win Best Picture in March.
Opening Night Gala (Sep 10, Roy Thomson Hall). First weekend (Sep 11-13) = celebrity sightings peak. Industry weekend (Sep 14-17) = quieter, more arthouse premieres. People's Choice Award announced Sep 20.
